- Mariah (Mary Jane) Mabee, age 78, died on July 10,2005, in Columbia, Missouri. She was born on January 26, 1927, in Unionville, Missouri, the daughter of Charles Ray and Amy Winifred Mabee.
Mariah (or Mary Jane as she was known to those she grew up with) graduated from Unionville High School in 1945 and attended college at Kirksville State Teacher's College in Kirksville, Missouri.
She was an elementary school teacher in Colorado and California, a writer, an artist with fiber arts being her passion and teacher of art teachers in California and Missouri. She loved to travel and was constantly learning and teaching. After impromptu lectures, she generally joked that it would be followed by a quiz. Upon retirement she returned to Putnam County and spent her final years between Unionville, Kirksville, Colulmbia, Missouri, and Mexico.
Her first marriage was to John W. Anderson, who preceded her in death. Later, she married George Zust.
She was a confirmed Episcopalian and a lifetime seeker of Catholic and spiritual truths.
Mariah is survived and beloved by George Zust; her children, Elizabeth Haithe Anderson, Mimms J. Mabee, John W. Anderson and his wife, Kathy, and Kate Anderson; seven grandchildren, Zoe Anderson, Ty Anderson, Winifred (Winnie) Mabee, Sigourney Christine Anderson, Katie Anderson, Sean Anderson and Daniel Anderson, as well as her brother, Charles Ray Mabee II, and his wife, Barbara.
Mariah was a spiritual inspiration to many, intolerant of the intolerant and sorely missed by those who loved her.
Memorials can be made to either the Putnam County Courthouse Clock Restoration Fund or the Seymour, Iowa Cemetery, her final resting spot. All memorials can be left at or mailed to Keedy Law Office, P. O. Box 205, Unionville, MO.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Book Barn on the West Side of the Square in Unionville, Missouri, between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2004, to celebrate the life of Mariah Mabee.
