Memo |
Abt 1814 |
Woodhouse Township, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada [2] |
- Meanwhile the inhabitants had learned of the raid, and called a meeting in the house of William Drake at Dover. Thirty-seven men signed the resolutions passed by this meeting. Most of them were enrolled in militia units and 20 were of commissioned or warrant rank. Among the officers were the Lieutenant-Colonels of the 1st Middlesex and 1st Oxford Regiments, Mahlon Burwell of Port Talbot and Henry Bostwick of Dover; all but one or two of the others were from the 1st Norfolk Regiment. It was agreed to attack the raiders and to set guards at once near the mouth of Patterson's Creek. Early the next morning, December 12, there guards arrested Simon Maybee, one of the men who had left Woodhouse in October, 1813, and John G. Harris, who had been recruited during the raid.
Despositions were taken from the two marauders who described how they had pilfered farms in the vicinity of Black Creek while their owners (in one case at least) were attending the meeting at Drake's. Simon Maybee gave a pretty full account of the numbers and movements of the main party, as well as his own. His brother Pinkney told how Simon: "... came into the fuller's shop and solicited him to join him and go down the lake to the party that was there, and that their object was to take way officers that the Militia may be at peace and that they may go to work..."
