Mr. Mabie had served as town assessor for eight years and was reelected to that office on the Republican ticket for another term Nov. 5.
He was born in South Valley, Otsego County, Jan. 12. 1884, and could trace his ancestry back to the first settlers of America. On his father's side, be was a descendant of Jan Pettier Mabie. who settled in the Mohawk Valley in the 1600s and built the old Mabie house at Rotterdam which still stands.
Mr. Mabie came. to Amsterdam with his parents in 1900 and with his father operated a market garden and small fruit farm on the Upper Steadwell Ave location where he had since resided. In 1909, Mr. Mabie bought the farm from his father and concentrated on market gardening exclusively until 1916 when he purchased the adjoining farms. He then started the dairy herd which he built up to one of the outstanding herds in the county. He gave up active farming in 1943 due to health and the shortage of labor.
Mr. Mabie helped to organize the first Dairy Herd Improvement Assn., in Montgomery County and was instrumental in the formation in 1908 of the Milk Council Assn., of Amsterdam which is now the Amsterdam Milk Producers' Assn. He served as president of the Farm Bureau of Montgomery County in 1934, resigning from that post tp become the first soil conservation agent in the county in 1936, He also helped to organize and was a director for several years of the first GLF store in Amsterdam and was one of the organizers of the 4-H Club in Montgomery County. During World War II, Mr. Mabie served temporarily as 4-H Club agent in the county and was appointed by Cornell College to assist in the Emergency Farm Labor Program.
A life member and a director of the Montgomery County Fair .Assn., Mr. Mabie was also a director of the Saratoga-Fulton and Montgomery Counties Patrons' Relief Fire Assn., and a director of the FHA, formerly the FSA. He was a director of the Schenectady Produce Credit Assn.. for six years having assisted in the organization of that group, and was a member of Scattergood Grange, 1514, as well as Pomona Grange and the state and national granges.
