- The death of Robert J. Smith of this village, a former Otsego County Treasurer and chairman of the Otsego County Board of Supervisors, occurred Wednesday of .last week at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital following a long illness. He would have been 86 years old last Sunday.
Mr. Smith was born in Cooperstown on December 12, 1879, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Smith. He was educated in the public schools, and taught school in Roseboom for 15 years prior to entering business in that community, where he operated a store for 15 years. He was a member of the Otsego County Board of Supervisors from Roseboom for six years, and was chairman of the Board in 1925. He served two three-year terms as Otsego County Treasurer, from January 1, 1930 until December 31, 1935. Since his retirement from that office he had made his home in Cooperstown where he was a member of the Village Board of Trustees for a number of years, and served as Mayor from August 1943 until March 1944.
He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club and at his death was an honorary member. He served for several years as its sergeant-at-arms. He also was a member of the First Methodist Church of this village.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member and Past Master of Cherry Valley Lodge. F. and A. M.; a member and Past High Priest of Otsego Chapter. No.. 26, Royal Arch Masons; a member and Past Commander of Otsego Cornmandry, No. 76, Knights Templar; and a member of Ziyara Shrine Temple of Utica. He was a Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Otsego-Schoharie District, and a member of the Past Masters Association of Otsego Lodge.
Mr. Smith served as director of Civil Defense for Otsego County during World War II. At his death, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Cooperstown.
He married the former Miss Leona Mabie on December 23, 1900 in Roseboom. She survives together with four nephews, William Foland of Binghamton, Charles Foland of Syracuse, George Foland of .Cooperstown, and David Mabie of Marshville; and three nieces, Miss Katherine Foland of Frederick, Md., Mrs. Richard Vedder of Amsterdam, and Mrs. Marian Mabie, also of Amsterdam.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Tillapaugh Funeral Home here with the Rev. Frederick L. Connell, former pastor, and the Rev. Albert F. Almstedt, present pastor of the First Methodist Church officiating. Members of the Cherry Valley Masonic Lodge conducted a Masonic service at the funeral home Friday evening at 8 o'clock. Burial was in South Valley Cemetery.
