  Anecdote	the molesting of settlers who had strayed, possibly unwittingly, on to tribal lands, increased considerably. Charles Mabey's farmlet at Taita was invaded by angry Maoris in mid-December who stole his axe and pulled up all his peas, potatoes and other vegetables "leaving the poor man without anything growing to feed himself". .... It was no wonder that over 118 Hutt settlers crowded into the Aglionby Arms in September, 1844 to discuss "the present state of the district" and the "seizure of their lands by the Natives". A memorial, signed by 118 people, demanded from Governor FitzRoy that something be done about the land question, which "after a period of three years' delay was still unsettled". They also demanded that something be done about the Maori depredation, against which they could legally "obtain no redress".
