Anecdote |
1975 [15] |
- When my parents moved to Florida in 1975, I found an old wooden chest in the garage and asked my dad, if I could take it for my daughter, Jody who liked antiques. It had several layers of gray paint on it. She stripped it and refinished the wood. Inside, she found the date 1891 carved into the wood.
My dad remembered that his grandfather, Clarence Mabie had made a wooden hope chest for his daughter, Kate Jane when she was 13 years old. My dad thought it had burned when the family lost their house and barn in a fire in Westdale, New York, about 1910. The old chest had been in my fathers garage since the death of his father, Gilbert Hague in 1937. My daughter, now treasures the surprised inheritance and uses it for a coffee table.
