Witness-Obituary |

Geneva, New York [6] |
- Mrs. Mabie was born in Howic, near Edinburgh, Scotland, Oct. 2, 1785, the third of nine children. She came to America with he r parents in the year 1796, three years before the death of General Washington. After residing for a time in New York city, she removed to Stamford, Delaware county, N. Y., where most of her early life was passed. There she was married to Daniel Mabie, Feb. 15th, 1815. In 1826 she removed with her husband to Geneva, N. Y., where she resided for more than thirty years. From Geneva, after a short residence in Williamsport, Pa., she came to Dixon, May, 1869. Here her husband died Oct. 1, 1871. Mrs. M. was the mother of eight children, five of whom are still living. At the age of sixteen she publicly professed her faith in Christ, and united with the Presbyterian church, of which she has been a consistent and devoted member for more than eighty, years. In many respects Mrs. M. was a remarkable person. It is remarkable certainly, that one single human life should run parallel with an entire national history. She was born three years before the adoption of our national constitution. Though spared to such an extreme age her "natural force was scarce abated," and she, was almost entirely exempt from the ordinary weaknesses incidental to old age. Her physical health was most excellent up to the time of her last short illness. Her place in the sanctuary of God was seldom, if ever, vacant on a Sabbath morning, until two weeks before her death; and no more appreciative worshiper was there. Her mental faculties were thoroughly preserved to the last. Her grasp of divine truth was most remarkably strong, and her faith and hope were always bright and clear. For more than thirty-five years she had been almost totally blind, and frequently was she called to pass through deep waters of affliction, but she "endured as seeing Him who is invisible." Never was a murmur known to escape from her lips, and her character has ever displayed the ripened fruits of grace. At the last, the cords which bound her to life were gently though rapidly unloosed, and she went down into the valley firmly supported by the "rod and staff" of the Great Shepherd. Now her "eyes see the King in his beauty." She sees Him and is like Him. And is satisfied.
