Anecdote |
- George Mabee had a large cottage at Marshall's Bay on the Ottawa River, near Arnprior. He severed a small lot and Clara [Bingleman] built a cottage there in 1938. After Uncle George died Walter Turnbull purchased the large cottage, and later sold it to Leila and Bruce Green, Leila being a niece to Aunt Clara..
Clara was the daughter of George's half sister Lydia Stuart, and when she was eighteen Uncle George, who was a professor at a university in Ottawa, had her come live with them so she could take a secretarial course. She got a job in the parliament buildings and after a time became the private secretary to Walter Turnbull. Walter at one time was private secretary to Prime Minister McKenzie King, and later became Deputy Postmaster General of Canada, and Aunt Clara remained his private secretary.

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada [10] |
- Classical Master at the Lisgar Collegiate Institute for over a quarter century, George Elliott Mabee, MA, died suddenly in his car at Arnprior station on Tuesday afternoon. He had been in excellent health and was preparing to return to Ottawa from his summer home at Marshall's Bay. He was in his 78th year.
Born in Charlotteville in Norfolk County, Ontario, the son of the late George Mabee and his wife, Pamela Elliott, he received his early education in that district, and later graduated from the University of Toronto with a double degree in Classical and Modern languages. He entered the teaching profession which he followed until his retirement from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in 1936, except for a brief interlude as a young man in Mexico and the Southern States.
The greatest part of his teaching life was spent in the High Schools of Port Hope, Arnprior and Ottawa. He came to Lisgar as an assistant Classical Master in 1910, and on the death of the late William Hardie, in 1920, he was appointed head of that department, a position which he filled with distinction until his retirement ten years ago.
He was an inspiring teacher, who held the full confidence and friendship of his classes. Until stricken with a severe illness he was an enthusiastic skier, golfer and curler, being a member of the Rivermead Golf Club and the Rideau Curling Club.
An Anglican by faith, Mr Mabee for many years served as a reader at the Church of St Alban the Martyr.
He is survived by his wife, formerly Eula Northrop of Alymer, Ontario, one daughter, Mrs Douglas Nairn of London, England and one granddaughter. His son Elliott, died in 1916 and his brother H C Mabee, in December of last year. His only grandson was killed in action in the recent war.
The body is resting at the parlors of George H Rodgers, Ltd. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
