He worked in oilfields in California as a young man and joined the Canadian Army, serving in France and Germany from 1914-1918 (WWI). After discharge, he worked for the railroad as a chef on special trains between Canada and the U.S. and throughout Canada. Harry rejoined the Army as a chef in 1939 and served four years before returning to Canada, where he was posted to the Canadian Prison Camp, which housed 1500 German prisoners at Grand Ligne, Quebec (now part of St. Blaise, PQ).
