Witness-Obituary |
- Special to the New York Times. "Charles Mabey, 81, Ex-Utah Governor". Salt Lake City, April 27, Charles Rendell Mabey, Governor of Utah from 1921 to 1925, died yesterday at his residence in suburban Bountiful. He was 81 years old. Mr. Mabey attended the University of Utah and later did additional work at the University of Chicago after the Spanish-American War had interrupted his education. During that war he served in the Philippine Islands campaigns of 1898 and 1899. Thirty years later he received a Silver Star for gallantry in action on May 14, 1899. After a brief career as a teacher, Mr. Mabey helped to found the Bountiful State Bank in 1906. He later became its president. He was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1912 for the first of two terms. After Army service in World War I, he was elected Governor. Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served as quorum instructor until his death. A former commander in the American legion, he held many national posts in that organization. Surviving are four sons, Rendell, Robert, Edward and Charles T. Mabey, four brothers and two sisters."
