- Five occupants of a car which crashed head-on with a Ni-Sun motor coach eight miles east of Elkhart, Ind, were killed, and a sixth injured beyond probable recovery.
The dead in this crash, including a mother and three children, are Mrs Hazel U. Mabie, 41; two daughters, Myrtle, 19, and Ruth 14; a son, Charles 17; and Daniel Papa, 20 owner of the car. Another daughter, Ruby Mabie, twin sister of Ruth. All were from Elkhart

- Charlie A. Mabie, 86, of 1508 E. Bristol St., died Monday evening in General Hospital after an extended illness. He was born Jan 21, 1889, in LaGrange. His first wife, Hazel, and three children were killed in an automobile accident April 28,1929. He then married Edna M. Stowe, Oct 24, 1931, in Elkhart. She survives with one daughter, Mrs Dewain (Ruby) Filley, Dowagiac; a stepson, Robert B. Stowe, Elkhart; six grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Anna Messenger, Jackson, Mich. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home where services will be 11 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Thomas C. Kuhn, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Mr. Mabie retired Jan 8, 1954, from the New York Central Railroad where he was employed as a freight conductor for 37 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Legion of the Moose, and the Fellowship of the Moose. The Moose Lodge will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home

- Edna M. Mabie, 88, of 1508 E. Bristol St., died at 6:25 am today at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness. She was born Jan 20, 1902, in New York City. She married Charlie A. Mabie on Oct 24, 1931, in Elkhart. He died Aug 25, 1975, in Elkhart. Surviving are a son, Robert B. Stowe, Elkhart; a step-daughter, Ruby Filley, Dowagiac; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Gary (Mary) Tews, Willoughby, Ohio. A brother and a sister are deceased. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and until services at 3 p.m. Saturday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Mrs. Mabie worked at C.G. Conn for 50 years, retiring in 1967. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Railroad Trainmen and of Women of Moose Chapter 78.

- Ruby Isabelle Filley, 94, of Regent Street, Niles, and formerly of Dowagiac, died at 3:05 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at West Woods of Niles, following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Jan. 29, at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with the Rev. Janet Van Lear of First Presbyterian Church in Niles officiating.
Committal services will be on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Burr Oak Cemetery, in Burr Oak Township, with the Rev. Sally Wicks of First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis officiating.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home one hour before services.
She was born on Dec. 7, 1914, in Sturgis, to Charles and Urial (Cummins) Mabie. She graduated from Elkhart Central High School in Indiana and lived in Dowagiac before moving to Niles in 1999.
She enjoyed playing cards with neighbors, completing word puzzle books, flower gardening and traveling throughout the United States and most of all caring for her family.
On July 4, 1934, in Elkhart, Ind., she married Dewain Filley, who died on Jan. 12, 1982.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Charles Mabie; sister, Vaughn Mabie and twin sister, Ruth Mabie, who all died with their mother in an automobile accident.
She is survived by her three daughters, Jan Neff of Woodland, Calif., Helen (Stan) Gorton of Niles and Mary (Douglas) Fox of Portage; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
