Anecdote |
- Gladys Marie Caughell was born at home in Niagara Falls, NY on March 21, 1917.
Although her birth certificate lists John Caughell and Alice Matilda Barber as her parents, DNA testing and research by her daughters disproves this fact.
Gladys' mother was determined to be Minnie Victoria Barber, younger sister of Alice Matilda Barber. Her father, as confirmed by DNA matches, was Vincenzo Critelli of Niagara Falls, New York.
Minnie Victoria Barber suffered life-threatening complications giving birth and Gladys was "adopted" by Alice and John Caughell.
NY census records for 1925 show Gladys living in the Caughell household. Gladys told her daughters at age 8 after the sudden death of John Caughell in September 1925, she went to live with Minnie Victoria Barber-Hauck (her birth mother) and husband Milton Earl Hauck. They were wed on August 16, 1916 in Welland, Ontario, Canada.
No DNA matches were found for Gladys' daughters and John Caughell nor PREVIOUS generations of the Caughell family.
However, DNA matches for John and Alice Caughell's Grandchildren and Gladys' daughters appropriately confirm they are second cousins. They share Great Grandparents on the Barber side, their Grandmothers were sisters.
