Anecdote |
- It is probable (although there is no direct proof) that Ella's birth parents were Josiah Smith and Maria Richards, there are three indicators of their identity:
Josiah (born circa 1823 in New York) and Maria (born circa 1825 in England) appear in the 1860 census in Granger Township, Allegany County, New York, but in no subsequent records. This could indicate that they died and their children were put up for adoption.
In the 1855 census, Maria's brother Robert Richards is listed in her home.
Ella's 1865 census shows she was born inAllegany County, New York and lived about 8 miles from Granger Township.
Ella's 1880 census record states that her mother was born in England, and Maria was one of only two Smith mothers in Allegany county in 1860 who were born in England. The other was Caroline Smith, wife of Largins - but she is known to be Caroline Dunn. She and her husband moved to Michigan, with their children.
