Solon Township, Kent County, Michigan [7] |
- Delmar Mabie is Taken by Death. One of the pioneer residents of the community, Delmar Mabie, died August 10, following an illness of more than a year. He was born in Solon Township near White Creek June 24, 1865 on the farm where he died. His father took up the farm as a land grant from the government. At the age of 14, Del Mabie, cast his lot with the great lumber industry of Michigan. As the forests receded to the north before the onslaught of the lumberman, he followed them, working in many sections of the state. At various times he was riverman, shingle weaver, sawyer, and setter. He worked in the last sawmill in Cedar Springs as the last "old timer" in the community who had the knowledge and the physical ability to act as a setter on the carriage. In 1903 Mr. Mabie turned his full time to farming at the family farm in north Solon. For many years he served as a member of the school board in his community, and also served his township as a Justice of the Peace. During all of his life, Mr. Mabie was keenly interested in hunting, fishing and conservation. Rev. R. F. Barram, conducted the funeral services Tuesday afternoon at Walshes' Funeral Home and interment was in Crandall cemetery. Mr. Mabie is survived by his widow, Nettie R. Mabie; by four sons, Don of Cedar Springs, Roy of Sand Lake, Lowell of Muskegon, and Vern of Mt. Pleasant by nine grandchildren.
