Emmett, Idaho [8] |
- A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Sweet-Montour Cemetery, Idaho, for Nelson Ray Mabee, who went to be with his Heavenly Father on April 14, 2009, while doing what he enjoyed ... riding his bicycle around the neighborhood and visiting with neighbors. Nelson will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and neighbor who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Nelson was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Nampa, Idaho, to Ray and Trella Mabee, and was the eldest son of four children. He lived and worked on his parents' ranch in Sweet, Idaho. In March of 1944, during World War II, Nelson joined the Navy and was sent with a combat unit to the Philippines. He was stationed on the Island of Manicani where he served until his discharge in May of 1946.
In 1947, Nelson purchased the ranch on Squaw Butte his grandfather had homesteaded in 1907, and on March 23, 1948, he married Marjorie Orr continuing to farm and raise three children. In 1953, Nelson went to work for the Simplot Sawmill in Horseshoe Bend, Idaho. In 1957, he sold the ranch and moved to Montour, and began 29 years of employment with Boise Cascade at the sawmill in Emmett.
While living at Montour, Nelson enjoyed farming, raising his family and making lasting friendships and memories. Nelson and his family moved to Emmett in 1971, and he retired from Boise Cascade on November 26, 1986. He and Marge enjoyed several years of traveling, camping and fishing. Nelson was an amateur mechanic and electrician. He enjoyed "tinkering" with cars and fixing anything that didn't work to his satisfaction. His later years were spent taking care of his yard, enjoying his grandchildren and great grandchildren, reading, riding his bike and visiting with friends.
Nelson is survived by his two brothers, Orval (Lennis) Mabee of Emmett, Idaho, and Jim Mabee of New Plymouth, Idaho; Marjorie, his loving wife of 61 years; two daughters, Linda (Stan) Reich of Nampa, Idaho and Carol (Brock) Rainey of Emmett; and a son, Raymond (Christy) Mabee of Covallis, Ore.; six grandchildren, Eric (Julia) Reich, Angie (Matt) Stevens, Kerri (Keith) Jackson, Steven Reich, Sean (Li-En) Mabee and Randi Mabee; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy Heikkila, and a nephew, John Hackenberg.
