- Jean Ina Mariette Mabee was born on October 2, 1923 in Bayham Twp.,Elgin Co., Ontario, the daughter of Uz Mabee and Vera Geneive Muriel Wilson. She lived with her family on their farm, Maple Bluffs, on the west road from Eden, Bayham Twp., Elgin Co., Ontario until September25, 1937 when her father was killed and her mother gravely injured in an automobile accident. Jean graduated from Eden Public School at age 12 and attended one year of high school in Eden but missed her year because of an attack of appendicitis in June of 1937. After the accident she lived with her Aunt Mabel Seymour in Tillsonburg during the week where she attended Tillsonburg High School and with her Grandmother Wilson and brother at their home in Eden on the weekends. In between bouts of surgery her mother would return to the home as well. She finished high school in 1941 and attended Robinson Business College in Tillsonburg for one year. In the summer of 1942 Jean moved to Hamilton, Ont. where she worked at the Dominion Bank at King and Wentworth as a secretary. In 1945 her mother was well enough to leave Western Hospital in Toronto and Jean returned to Tillsonburg to live with her mother and brother on Queen St. and work at Denton and Vance Insurance Office on Brock St.
Jean met her husband, John, in 1946-47 and they were married on August14, 1948 in the Presbyterian Church in Tillsonburg. In Tillsonburg they lived at 46 Pine St., 48 Pearl St. and Venison St. E., before they moved to Toronto on April 1, 1952. Their first child, Robert, was born in Tillsonburg in 1951. Their second child, Holly, was born in Toronto in 1953. The family rented apartments at 15 Anglesey Blvd., Apt 112 and 2 Hill Heights Rd., Apt. 34 in Etobicoke until 1958when they purchased a home at 90 Wellesworth Dr. in Etobicoke. In1961, just after their third child Paul was born, the family moved to Highgate, Kent Co., Ont. and in 1969 to Alvinston, Lambton Co., Ont. John's last branch was in Drumbo, Oxford Co., Ont. where he transferred in 1972.
John retired on January 1, 1975 and John and Jean bought a home at 45Bidwell St. in Tillsonburg, Ont. Although a Baptist by birth, after her marriage Jean became an active member of the United Church of Canada and when her husband retired she went back to work in 1975 as the Secretary-Treasurer of St. Paul's United Church in Tillsonburg. In 1986 she took a job in the office at Hickory Hills Adult Community and in 1990 she accepted a job as the Secretary-Treasurer of South-West Norfolk Pastoral Charge in Courtland, Ont. During these years she was also active in the local Progressive Conservative Party organization and the Canadian Cancer Society while caring for her husband, John, who suffered with Alzheimer's Disease. Jean successfully overcame bowel cancer in 1991 and a serious heart attack in January of 2000. After the death of John in June of 2000, Jean sold the house at 55 Bidwell to her daughter, Holly, and in September,2000 rented a bungalow at 52 Baldwin St. Jean lived happily in that house until her death of a heart attack on June 19, 2001 at Tillsonburg General Hospital. She was buried beside her husband, John, at Eden Cemetery.
