Witness-Obituary |
3 Apr 1926 |
Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey [11] |
- Former County Counsel Clarence Mabie is returning to New Jersey with the body of his wife who died very suddenly in Jamaica last Thursday.
Details concerning the nature of the illness which caused the death are not known.
George Mabie of Hackensack, brother of the former county counselor, was advised of the death in a cablegram, received late yesterday.
When Mr Mabie left here a few days ago for Jamaica he knew that his wife was not feeling well but did not intimate that the illness was serious.
The Mabies were married in Paris two years ago.
It is believed Mr Mabie arrived in Jamaica one day previous to the death of his wife.
He left there with her body yesterday and is expected back the early part of next week.
Mrs Mabie was a member of an old and well known Jersey City family.
Last January, Mrs Mabie, accompanied by her mother, left for Jamaica, where the Van Horne winter home is located.
The trip was made under advise of a physician.
Last year Mrs Mabie suffered an attack on influenza and later developed rheumatism.
The curative baths at Atlantic City for six months failed to give much relief and her physician advised the natural hot water baths in Jamaica.
The trip in January followed and earlier reports indicated a slight improvement.
Last week, late, Mr Mabie set sail for Jamaica. It was the intention, following a brief visit with his wife and her mother, for all to return and the Mabies planned on re-opening their home in Elizabeth.
The news of the death was a decided shock to all concerned.
Mr Mabie has not enjoyed the best of health himself for the past several months. He has made his home, since January with his mother in Teaneck.
The Van Horne home in Jamaica is located in Kingston.
Mrs Mabie's father was the late Franklin Brooks, a banker, and her mother, Julia G Van Horne.
Further details could not be ascertained.
