- Peacefully passed away surrounded by family in Los Angeles, on March 5, 2004. Cheryl was born in Los Angeles, California to her parents, Judson Tyler Mabey and Thelma Lee Mabey on June 8, 1947. She grew up in La Habra, California. Cheryl's life was dedicated to the service of others. After graduating from Mount St. Mary's College, she pursued a Master's of Arts degree in Political Science from Purdue University and later received her law degree from Loyola Law School. For over 20 years Cheryl shaped the lives of young women at Mount St. Mary's College, where at the age of 26, she became the youngest dean in the College's history. As Dean of Students and Executive Director of the Women's Leadership Program she developed a model women's leadership program and was chosen as a Kellogg National Leadership Fellow. She also served as a consultant to universities, governmental agencies, community groups and professional organizations. While married to her husband, Jack Ruebensaal, and raising her son Tyler, Cheryl also became the Director of LA PASS, a project funded by the Ford Foundation to advocate for student success. Cheryl later went on to be the founder and Executive Director of Project GRAD Los Angeles, an educational non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of urban youth entering and succeeding in college. More than anything, Cheryl was dedicated to her family. She is survived by her husband Jack, son Tyler, sister Carla Bouchard, and nephews Ryland and Judson Bouchard. A vigil will be held Wednesday, March 10 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary located at 11160 Stranwood Avenue, Mission Hills, (818) 361-7387.
