Obituary |
- At the age of 90, Ruth Mabey Donaldson, our sweet mother and last living child of William and Nannie Lou Mabey, died peacefully at home on December 28, 2007. She had been in failing health for the last year and a half after experiencing several falls. The fourth child, and only girl, born to her parents, Ruth began life on September 19, 1917 in Council, Idaho. Her father's occupation as sheep herder necessitated moving periodically, eventually ending up in Bancroft, Idaho. Her younger life was that of a country girl, the only little girl for miles around. She became an endless wanderer of the hills that stretched for miles around their farm and a voracious reader, a trait she passed on to all her children. She and her four brothers attended a one room schoolhouse where they made up nearly the entire school population of nine, and had to walk a half mile everyday to and from to attend, summer or winter, rain or snow, (except they got to ski it in the winter which she loved). She attended high school in Lava Hot Springs, when her mother's death changed the course of her life, resulting in her decision to become a nurse. At the age of 18, she entered nurses training at LDS Hospital in S.L.C. She graduated in 1938, promptly married one of her patients, Allan S. Donaldson, and began her career in earnest as an obstetrical nurse while at the same time beginning her married life with the same resolve. She had six children, Anne (Lee Pipkin), Kathleen Keller (John Cederquist), Stewart, Pamela, Sheila (Peterson), and Laurie during the next 13 years while she continued with her nursing. We children remember being with mom when she was recognized by former patients from LDS or St. Mark's Hospitals who remembered her tender, gentle care of them. Her early life experiences developed in her the qualities of nurturing and selflessness one seldom sees now and to such a degree that she will be remembered by everyone whose life she touched. After she retired from nursing, she kept busy with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of who were fortunate enough to have her play a significant part in their lives for many years. She was one of those extraordinary grandmas for whom you would ride "over the river and through the woods" everyday, not just on Christmas. At our mother's request she will be cremated and only a private memorial service will be held. She asked that anyone who wished to, rather than sending flowers, make a charitable contribution to the Primary Children's Medical Center.
