- On Saturday afternoon, January the 18th, the remains of George W. Maybee, a prominent Sullivan County man, were laid to rest in the Narrowsburg cemetery.
He died at his late residence in Narrowsburg on January 15th of paralysis, impressive funeral services being held at the Maybee residence at one o'clock. A large concourse of friends and an escort composed of members of the Masonic Lodge of Jeffersonville, Narrowsburg, and delegates from other F. and A. M. lodges of Sullivan County followed the body to the cemetery and the last solemn rites of the order accorded the departed brother.
The deceased was born in the town of Liberty on June 27, 1842. At an early age he evinced a great desire for knowledge, attended the best schools that the county afforded and by hard work and perseverance he attained his ambition to be a teacher. He taught school successfully with much credit to himself as an educator. The field of these instructions covered many districts in Sullivan County including Youngsville, Jeffersonville and Callicoon Center. In the year 1878, while teaching school at Callicoon Center, he joined the Masonic Lodge at Jeffersonville.
On April 31st, in the year 1881, he purchased the Sullivan County Record, which paper he edited for three years. The deceased was always interested in newspaper work and up to the time of his death was not only a regular correspondent to various sheets, but was the local editor of the Narrowsburg Democrat.
In the year 1884 he changed his residence to Narrowsburg where he continued to reside till death claimed him. He was elected a Justice of the Peace, and served for twenty successive years, being well trained in the intricacies of the law.
He married Jane C. Lewis on November 21, 1866.
The surviving relatives are Jacob Maybee, Ex-District Attorney of Monticello; Ernest G. and Bruce E. Maybee, sons, of Narrowsburg, and one daughter, Cora E. Branning. Mr. Maybee was also a member of the M. E. Church of Narrowsburg

1926 |
Narrowsburg, Sullivan County, New York [8] |
- Ernest G. Maybee, aged 58, a well-known citizen of Narrowsburg, died at his home there last Friday noon, Sept. 17, 1926. He was taken suddenly ill with vomiting spells on Thursday and Dr. Kelly, the local physician, was called to treat him.
The funeral was held on Sunday, with burial in the Glen Cove Cemetery there by Tusten Lodge of Odd Fellows.
Mr. Maybee was a native of ths county and was a son of George W. Maybee, a former well known school teacher in this section, and at one time publisher of the Record. While the senior Mr. Maybe taught school here the family lived in the Dr. Bennett house on Maple Avenue. Later the family removed to Narrowsburg. The mother was a sister of the late Joseph Taylor of Parksville, who served for some time as school commissioner in the second district of Sullivan county. Both parents are dead.
Ernest chose a commercial career. For a time he clerked in the store of the late W. J. Harding at Callicoon Center. Later he worked for R. Jordan & Co. Port Jervis, and still later he took up commercial traveling and for some years past represented the dry goods house of Babcock & Shannon of Albany. He was also at one time secretary of the Big Eddy Telephone Co. at Narrowsburg. He was a Democrat and held town offices in Tusten township.
Mr. Maybee was married twice. His first wife was Louise Gebhardt of Narrowsburg, by whom he had one son, Kenneth, now a student at Union College. His second union was a few years ago with Miss Edna Branning of Narrowsburg, who survives with a child of one and a half years. He also leaves a brother, Bruce of Hancock, and a sister, Mrs. Cora Branning, widow of Frank Branning, of Narrowsburg.
He was a nephew of the late Jacob M. Maybee, prominent Sullivan county lawyer.

- Ernest G. Maybee, of Narrowsburgh, died suddenly Thursday of last week. Two days before his death he had been elected Republican committeeman in a four cornered fight in Narrowsburgh, beating his constituents by a good sized margin. Two weeks ago he was at the Bankers Banquet a t Roscoe, apparently in the best of health and in a jolly mood.
To cut off everything, family, friends and business and walk away with Death is a sad story. By occupation he was a traveling man, selling goods for Babcock & Shannon Co., and Monticello was a part of his territory and the Watchman office was his visiting place. He was a splendid fellow
