- A 92-year-old Soldiers Grove woman died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwys. 14/61 and Hwy. 27 south of Viroqua, Sunday [August 28, 2011], at 3 p.m.
Alma Maybee, 92, was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by her husband, Garrel Maybee, 91, which was traveling east on Hwy. 27.
"They went right through the stop sign and into the path of a van," Vernon County Sheriff John Spears said.
The Maybe vehicle struck a southbound van driven by Jack Bartelt, 65, of Gays Mills.
Spears said both Garrel and Alma Maybee were taken to hospitals in La Crosse. The Vernon County Sheriff's Department on Monday morning announced that Alma Maybee died of her injuries. Garrel Maybee was listed in fair condition by Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, Monday.
Bartelt and his passenger, Vickie Bartelt, were transported to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua by Tri-State Ambulance. Spears said they had non-life-threatening injuries.
Assisting at the scene was the Viroqua Fire Department.
The accident is under investigation.

- Alma Pearl (McDaniel) Maybee, 92, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, in Soldiers Grove.
She was born July 8, 1919, to Otto and Elsie McDaniel of Soldiers Grove. Alma was one of seven children.
Alma married Garrel Maybee at the Little Brown Church, July 3, 1938, in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Sebulah, Ill., where Garrel worked cutting timber, while Alma took in boarders. One year later, they moved to North Clayton ridge where they began farming. It was there that they purchased their first farm of 40 acres. Both worked the land as they started their family. Alma and Garrel were eventually parents to three children, Mary, Joyce and Jack. As this young family grew, they soon made their home on Trout Creek, where they purchased a 250 acre farm in the valley. It's there that Alma and Garrel have spent the last 70 years together.
As a wife and mother, Alma worked in the tobacco warehouse and at the local apple orchards during seasonal times of the year. She was a wondeful homemaker to her family. She loved to cook and bake. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, collecting thimbles and raising chickens on the farm. She made the best home-made noodles. She was noted for those and contributed many of her home-made noodles to local church suppers for years. Her family loved to go to grandma's house for home-made chicken and noodles.
Alma and Garrel had three children, Mary (Richard, deceased) Campbell of Soldiers Grove, Joyce Banta (deceased) and Jack Maybee of Blue Springs, Mo.
Alma has nine grandchildren, Brian (Vicki) Campbell of Soldiers Grove, Carmen (Dan) Phelps of La Crosse, Stacey (Jamie) Nutter of Fennimore, Jeffrey (Gale) Banta of San Palo, Brazil, Steve (Cindy) Banta, of Kingsland, Ga., Brent (Sue) Banta, Wisconsin Rapids, Wendy (Shannon) Davies, of Grain Valley, Mo., Misty (Austin) Floersch of Olathe, Kan., Ashley Maybee of Kansas City, Mo.; and two stepgrandchildren, Joe Phelps of La Crosse and Tom (Gina) Phelps of West Salem.
