Carmel, Putnam County, New York [6] |
- Nathan C. Dykeman, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of the town of Southeast, died on Wednesday afternoon about 2 o'clock at his home near Dykeman's Station, from the effects of a stroke of paralysis sustained on Sunday last. On Sunday he walked from his home to the Dykeman's Baptist Church, a distance of about a mile, and attended the services. In the evening, after he had returned home, he was seized with a stroke of paralysis and lapsed into unconsciousness, in which condition he remained until Wednesday afternoon, when his spirit returned to the God who gave.
Mr. Dykeman was in his 78th year. He was born in the town of Patterson and was the son of Peter and Fanny Baldwin Dykeman. But one member of his father's family is now left, Mrs. Sarah Townsend, widow of John Townsend, of Bound Brook, N.J. Mr. Dykeman was a widower, his wife having died a few years ago. He leaves one son, Alexander M. Dykeman, to mourn the loss of one of the best of fathers.
Deceased had been engaged in farming during all his active life. He was a good man, upright and just in his dealings with all. He was a true Christian and a valued member of the Dykeman's Baptist Church, where he has hold the office of Deacon for many years. By his death, his son loses a kind father, the community a good, neighbor, the church a loyal and generous supporter and the town a sterling citizen.
The funeral services were held on Friday at his late residence at 2 p.m. The interment was in the family plot in Kelley Cemetery, Carmel, beside his wife
