- Sherman W. Mabey passed away at his home on September 7, 2008. He resided at 10127 South 1300 West in South Jordan, Utah at the time of his death.
He was born March 28, 1926 to Walter Amos Mabey and Ethel Ione Hicken in South Jordan. On June 16, 1948, Sherm married Bonnie Joan Neel in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in South Jordan where they raised their four children and spent almost 54 years building a life together. Sherm graduated from Jordan High School and from the University of Utah with a degree in electrical engineering. He served in the United States Navy during World War II was employed for 41 years by IBM in the field engineering division. His loves included his family and the farm. He loved to spend his time farming on the family farm in South Jordan. He was a member of the Utah Farm Bureau, and the farm is registered as a Century Farm. Sports were another life-long interest. He played or coached sports for the majority of his life, including playing Church basketball and fast pitch softball and coaching his sons and grandsons. If there was a game at Bingham High School, Sherm was there to lend his support to the team. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he sang in the Church choir for the majority of his life and shared his talent at missionary farewells, Church or memorial services. Music was a joy for him.
He is survived by children Rolayne (David) Hansen, Modesto, California; Karen (Kent) Johnson, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Steven (Janet) Mabey, South Jordan, Utah; and Brian (Bernice) Mabey, Page, Arizona; sister, Helen Burgon and brother, John Hicken (Velma) Mabey; 24 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; parents, Walter and Ethel Mabey; sisters, Arlene Mabey and Janice Miner, and grandson, Alex Walter Hansen.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 12, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the River Ridge 2nd Ward Chapel, 10194 South 1000 West. Friends and Family may call on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley Mortuary, 1007 West South Jordan Parkway (10600 South) from 6-8 p.m. and on Friday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Church.
