- Services were held May 2, 2003, for Harold Maybee, 88, former owner of a tent and awning company in California. The son of Louis and Lila Maybee, he was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Fresno, Calif. The fifth of seven siblings, he designed and built a glider at the age of 16. He later built a mountain cabin at Bass Lake, Calif. During the Depression, he served in the Civil Conservation Corps. Later, at Pacific Tent and Awning, he went from sweeping floors to sales manager and community liaison within a year. He married Marjorie Grace Griset on March 17, 1940. They lived in Fresno and in Santa Ana, Calif., where he operated a canvas manufacturing firm. He eventually became sole owner of Maybee Tent and Awning Co. in San Bernardino, Calif. In San Bernardino, Mr. Maybee served as chapter president of the Christian Business Men's Committee and on the boards of the Salvation Army and the First Assembly of God Church. He was a member of Rotary Club International for 28 years and was in the formation committee for the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International. With the help of two friends, Mr. Maybee designed the rebuilding of a 42-foot boat that was docked in San Diego, Calif. He served as commander of the U.S. Power Squadron and taught a course in celestial navigation at San Bernardino Valley College. In 1969, Mr. and Mrs. Maybee retired in Fishtail. He was known for his culinary skills and in his 70s worked as a cook for a hunting outfitter in the Beartooth Mountains. He was a member of Columbus Assembly of God Church and later attended Grace Fellowship Four Square Church in Absarokee.
