- With loving family at his side, Ian Stronach Stubbs passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2006 in his 103rd year. Ian was the eldest son of Jeannie and John Stubbs of Tillsonburg. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Eula Faye (Mabee) Stubbs and his brothers Frank, Percy and George (Pete) and sisters-in-law Jean, Doreen and Thelma.
Ian was born and raised in the Ingersoll-Tillsonburg area and was employed by Ontario Hydro from 1931 until his retirement in 1969 from the position of Consumer Service and Sales Engineer-West Central Region. Ian was devoted to his family and also maintained a deep commitment to each of the communities in which he lived. He served on numerous charitable committees and both he and his wife, Eula were recipients of the distinguished Paul Harris Fellow award of Rotary International while members of the Dundas Rotary Club. He was a founding member of the Merlin Rotary Club, and also served as President of the London Rotary Club in 1952, representing the club at the International convention in Paris, France. Ian embraced life, enjoyed traveling and lent a helping hand wherever possible. A summer cottage on Lake Erie (Port Burwell, Ont) was his source of peace and renewal. Ian always maintained a sense of humour, fair play, and a deep work ethic - a true gentleman.
He is survived by his daughters Betsy Freudeman of Collingwood, and Sarah St. Claire-Smith and her husband Robert of Waterloo. "Poppa will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Nicola Bontes and her husband Darrell of Ottawa, Carla Fox and her husband David of Oakville, Jennifer Malcolm and her husband Bill of Collingwood, Sarah Freudeman of Sherman Oaks, California, Michael Freudeman of Collingwood, and his great-grandchildren Alicia, and Carson Bontes, Iain Fox; Cody Malcolm, and Dustin Purdy. The family wishes to thank all the caring professionals at Breithaupt House, Columbia Forest Long Term Care Centre who have cared for Ian during the past 3 years. Your compassion and kindness brought warmth and happiness to Ian during his time with you and the family both gratefully acknowledges and recognizes your dedication and support. Special thanks also to Dr. Michael Sehl, Ians family physician, and very very special thanks to Jean Giesler Ians nurse and friend for many years.
Friends will be received at Ostranders Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell St. Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) on Friday November 24, 2006 from 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held in Ostranders Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday November 25, 2006 at 1 p.m. Rev. Richard Jones officiating. Interment Tillsonburg Cemetery.
