- John Mabie. 2nd, former postmaster and well known citizen died unexpectedly Thursday morning, after a lingering Illness of about a year's duration. He was In his 76th year.
Mr. Mabie was born In Peekskill on January 5, 1848, the son of John and Sarah Hilliker Mabie. His early schooling was obtained in the old yellow school house, District No, 7. on the South street hank and at Drum Hill.
At an early age, Mr. Mabie entered the employ of John R. Denike & Bros. in their dry goods and groceries store on the corner of Central avenue and Division street, where he remained for four years. He then became a clerk for Morris DeSee, who conducted a store on Central avenue for three years. Under the firm name of Mabie & Jewell, Mr. Mabie and Hollis E. Jewell conducted a shoe store where George D. McCutchen is now located. After four years at this location, the business was moved across the street. In two years, Mr. Jewell retired, selling out his interest to John M. Dyckman. The firm name became Mabie & Dyckman. Mr. Mabie retired at the end of the second year arid Mr. Dyckman took over the business.
.On May 1. 1884, Mr. Mabie opened a shoe shop in the Edwin Briggs building on South street, and for fifteen years, until 1899, when he became deputy postmaster, he conducted a shoe store there, until 1899 when he sold it to Alfred Posey.
Mr. Mabie in his younger days was very influential in the affairs of the Republican party. He was a delegate to conventions, town, county, assembly and district, senatorial and congressional for many years. He was a member of the Republican town committee for over a quarter of a century and secretary the majority of that time. He was elected assessor of the town of Cortlandt. on March 29. 1887, by a plurality of fourteen votes over William H Clinton. On March 2, 1890, he was re-elected, defeating Luther B. Tuttle by a plurality of 405. He was nominated for a third term of three years in 1893, but was defeated by Eugene B. Hill by thirty-five votes. The following year, he was elected assessor over Henry Murphy, by 985 votes. He served nine years in all as assessor.
He was also assessor of the village for a number of years. On March 2, 1886, he was elected village assessor by 254 votes over John Ames. In 1889, he was renominated and was defeated by the narrow margin of four votes by Harvey M. Washburn. The following year. March 4, 1890, he was reelected assessor over Thomas A. Whitney by 235 plurality. In 1893. he was renominated and again elected, defeating John Clark by 249 plurality. He served nine years as village assessor.
He was appointed deputy postmaster by David O. Montross, postmaster, in 1899, and assumed his duties on March 16, of that year. Mr Montross died before his term expired and was succeed by John L. Silleck, In 1903. Mr. Mabie became postmaster and served for two terms.
On November 26, 1871. Mr. Mabie was married to Miss Emma C. Christian, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Christian. Mrs. Mabie died on January 11, 1918. A daughter, Mrs. Thomas M. McCoy, survives.
Mr. Mabie was a life member of Cortlandt Lodge, No. 34, F. and A, M„ He was initiated on January 22, 1880, passed February 5, 1860, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on February 19,1880. On March 3, 1910, he was granted a lifetime membership. At one time, he was very much interested in lodge work and held several offices. His Grand Lodge number was 188,785 and his lodge number 200.
On December 4, 1866, Mr Mabie joined Cortlandt Hook and Ladder Company, No. 1. He became a member of the Peekskill Fire department on January 8, 1867. On January 4, 1876, he resigned. He rejoined as an active member in March 4, 1879, and resigned on May 2, 1882 On April 1, 1902, Mr. Mabie rejoined as an associate member. He resigned on February 2, 1923.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist church, Sunday afternoon at half past two, and will be in the charge of Cortlandt Lodge and A. M. The interment will be in Hillside.
