- Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Voorhees Funeral Home for the late Dr. Mac H. Mabey who passed away Friday, October 28, 1966 at Cuba Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Edward D. Peachey officiated, and burial was in Cuba Cemetery.
After retiring from active veterinary practice in 1960, Dr. Mabey did not enjoy the best of health, but he continued to be active in social and civic affairs, and his death came as a shock to a wide circle of friends who mourn his passing.
Born in the Town of Lyndon January 5, 1895, he was a son of John W. and Emma McStay Mabey. His wife, the former Rhea Royce, is surviving; a foster-son Ray Meek, of San Rafael, California; four grandchildren; one brother, Ross Mabey of Dallas, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Dr. Mabey was graduated from Cuba High School, and received a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University where he did graduate work and was for a time instructor in surgery at the Veterinary College there. In addition to his practice in Cuba, he was for about ten years veterinarian for Borden Co.
He was the founder, with Dr. Dana Scutt, of Guernsey Farms, which has served this area for more than twenty-five years; a member of Cuba Lodge 306 F. & A. M.; Ismailia Temple AAONMS of Buffalo; Scottish Rite, Olean; Allegany County Shrine Club; Farm Bureau, Cuba Grange 799; was a past president of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association; member of American Veterinarians Assoc, and N. Y. State Veterinarians Assoc.: and an honorary member of Alpha Psi Fraternity of Cornell University.
Dr. Mabey's paternal ancestors came to America from Holland. His grandfather was an early settler in the Rawson area, coming from Tompkins County in 1863. His maternal ancestors were of Scotch-Irish descent, settling in Lyndon Township in 1850.
Memorial gifts are being made to the Memorial Fund of the Cuba Historical Society, of which Dr. Mabey was a charter member.
