| Anecdote |
- Howard Lee Mabie was a career Marine. He was the company commander that took that hill at the Battle of Sugar Loaf Hill in Okinawa (which was the last great battle of WWII. His daughter, Nancy Berrett, still has the flag that was flown from the top of Sugar Loaf Hill.
Lee retired from the Marine Corps in April of 1965 and went to Twin Falls for his first grandchild to be born. They liked the town so much they bought a house and remained there from that time on. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps but always felt bad that he hadn't attended college. So, in the late ‘60s/early 70's, he attended Idaho State University. He lived in a pickup camper Monday thru Friday and went home on weekends until he had completed his Bachelor's degree. He graduated with a straight 4.0 grade point average. He then taught Jr. High history in Twin Falls for several years. He was much beloved by his students and was highly thought of by the community.
