Obituary |
- Norman Herbert Mabie died on January 22, 2007 in Claremont, NH. He was born at the Lucy Hastings Hospital in Manchester, NH on April 5, 1926; son of Percy R. and Esther (Campbell) Mabie.
He grew up in Bedford, NH where he attended Stevens Buswell School in Bedford Center. After graduating in 1939, he then attended Manchester West High School where he graduated with honors in 1943.
In August 1943 he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He was sent to Shepherd Field in Wichata Falls, Texas for basic flight training. He graduated in January 1944 and was sent to Aloe Field in Victoria, Texas for fighter plane training. He graduated from fighter training in January 1945 and was sent to Ft. Meyers, Florida where he trained as a tail gunner on the then new B-29's. He remained at Ft. Meyers until his discharge in 1946 when he returned to Portsmouth, NH and entered UNH's school of mechanical engineering.
After graduating from UNH in June 1950, he returned to Manchester where he opened his first business selling aluminum storm windows and doors.
In March 1957, he moved to Claremont, NH and continued the same business adding roofing and siding. In 1965 he had a severe heart attack and was forced to retire. In his retirement he kept very busy inventing a number of items including twister tubes for the wool spinning industry, endless belt connectors, and gun sights, etc. He held numerous U.S. patents. He enjoyed outdoor sports: hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. He was very competitive and raced snowmobiles; he won the U.S. Open at Ironwood, Michigan in 1971. His favorite sport was hunting large animals in Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia, Montana, and Idaho where he harvested grizzly bear, mountain sheep, mountain goats, elk, moose, and caribou. Hunting whitetail deer in New England and Canada brought him great enjoyment.
He was a lifetime member of B.P.O.E. Lodge #879 of Claremont, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #29 of Claremont, a member of the L.O.O.M. Lodge #1201 of Claremont and a member of the Foresters Club in Newport.
