- Friends of Mattie May "Mickie" Mabie, 71, of 56269 Silvercrest Drive, may call one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Monday services at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Christopher Pittman and his mother, Minister Dorothy Pittman of People's Protestant Church, Cassopolis, will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery. A meal will follow services at the cemetery at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 88, 1519 W. Bristol St., Elkhart.
Mrs. Mabie died at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday (March 22, 2005) in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, following a sudden illness.
She was born July 3, 1933, in Williamsville, Mo., to Roy and Gertrude (Provins) Brown. She married Rolland James Mabie in 1953. They are divorced.
Survivors include three son, Carl "Butch" Mabie, Arthur "Joe" Mabie and Keith Mabie, all of Elkhart; two daughters, Tami Carter and Tabatha Mabie, both of Elkhart; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; former husband Rolland James (Teresa) Mabie of Elkhart; a brother, O'Harold (Lois) Mabie of Ditmer, Mo., and a sister, Pauline Hooker of Murrayville, Ill. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bud Mabie, and four sisters, Lucille Leonard, Luelle Mills, Betty Jo Julian and Aileen Carter.
Mrs. Mabie worked at Barger Packaging (now Colbert Packaging) for 21 years and once worked at E.H. Tepe in Elkhart. She was a member of VFW Post 93 Ladies Auxiliary, Dunlap. She enjoyed reading, collecting angels, her dog Brandy and cat Timber Snow, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for her pies.
