- Catharine Mabee Schell, 86, the widow of Warren Schell and a survivor of the Sanilac county forest fire of 1881 which killed hundreds of persons, died at 11 pm Sunday in the home of a son, DeLoyd Schell of Pennfield township.
She had been seriously ill since last Wednesday, when she fractured her right hip in a fall at the home . She had resided with her son for more than 20 years.
Mrs Schell and her parents escaped death in the fire by lying in a clover field and wrapping wet clothing around their faces to protect them from the smoke. Their home and all their possessions were destroyed. Some estimates put the death toll at 500. [Note- in 1881 Catherine's parents were living in Oxford County, Ontario, and Catherine was married to Warren Schell and two son's in 1881 - that may have been the family - jdm]
Born Dec 12, 1852 in Ingersoll, Ont. She moved to Sanilac county with her parents, Walter and Lavine (Jaynes) Mabee when a young girl. Her husband died 12 years ago.
Surviving besides the son at whose home she died is another son Orland Schell of Georgia and two grandsons Rolan Schell of Detroit and Francis Schell of Pennfield township. Funeral services will be held Tuesday in the Shaw funeral home with the Rev Arthur L Ellsworth in charge.
