Anecdote |
- Milo Ray worked on a neighbor's farm when he was just a boy and also rode around with Dr. Rath in a horse drawn buggy, as the good doctor made his rounds to see people of the area. He recalled that the old doctor would often prescribe a bit of black berry brandy for his patients to cure what ailed them. Milo attended college in Steven's Point but gave up that education in favor of supporting his family. Milo served his apprenticeship in Granton and opened his own shop in Neillsville in l936. He continued barbering until the time of his illness and death in l985.
In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country as a pharmacist mate 3rd class in the Pacific Theatre until l945. He loved to tell the story of sending new seamen to the lab to get a set of fallopian tubes.
Milo was a very patriotic man and taught his children love of country and respect for the Stars and Stripes. Hewas a man of unquestionable integrity, well respected in the community and was known for his honesty and wisdom. His children were taught that honesty was a top priority and that cleanliness was indeed next to godliness. He would often say to Cheryl and Jeannie "You may not be the prettiest girls in town, but you can be the cleanest!"
Milo loved the Lord with all his heart, attending church with his family every Sunday except in case of illness or traveling. Often, he would serve area churches during the absence of their own pastors as a lay minister, preaching the sermon and leading the Sunday service. Evenings and very early mornings would find him in his favorite chair studying his Bible and other reference books.
Singing was one of Milo's passions, and he wouldn't miss a practice session of his church choir where he sang out with gusto in his warm, bass. When the choir would become distracted by some issue or the other, Milo would say to them "Come on kids, let's sing!" Other passions of his were: hunting "birds" with one of his favorite dogs, fishing in the Black River, and gardening. The Mabie family enjoyed many a fine meal of fresh game or fish and vegetables fresh from the garden.
Milo was ever faithful to his own strict code of ethics. He was a good father and faithful husband, never wavering in his devotion to his God, his family and his country. Milo loved his "Lonie" and was so proud of her. The two of them truly had a marriage made in heaven.
