| Anecdote |
- Adeline was the youngest girl in this family of eight - and the next to youngest child. She was born September 7, 1921, and lived her young life in Granton. She went to Hylandale Academy during her high school years. That's where she met Howard Berger. They were married Sunday, September 1, 1940, at her parent's home. She and Howard made their home in Detroit where he was employed as a carpenter. They came to the U.P. in 1942 to raise their family. Four girls were born: Charlotte, Aileen, Maxine, and Margie.
Adeline was better known as Sis. She was a stay-at-home housewife but did anything and everything to keep her family nurtured, focused, and well educated. She was an outstanding cook. I remember eating chili and cinnamon rolls nearly every Friday night. And oh what wonderful bread. She was also a blue-ribbon pie maker, often making lemon meringue pie from scratch. Those were Dad's favorite. One day she had made two pies and put them in the basement to cool under a tent of neswpaper. He came into the dark basement from the bright sunlight and stepped in the pies. Mom didn't make lemon meringue pies for long time after that.
She always grew a huge garden and canned tons of good food. One summer she and the girls picked and canned one-hundred quarts of wild raspberries. They were the best treats that winter!
She made many of our clothes and mended hundreds of our socks. Mom is a beautiful quilter and has given one of her quilt to each of her girls. She also knows how to paint and fine finish any kind of wood, whether it be furniture, walls, or siding.
Adeline wrote: I graduated from Hylandale, May 1939. Irene and I went to LaGrange, Illinois, some time that summer. We both worked as domestics (maids). My salary started at $6 per week while Irene received $8 at her place. Later I got a raise to $8 per week that year. I worked for a United Airplane pilot. He and his wife had one little boy named Butchie who was less then a year old. He couldn't walk yet, but I don't remember how old he was. I had to cook and clean. She sent the laundry out. It came back wet and I had to put it to dry, and I ironed. I remember helping Butchie learn to walk by propping him against a big hassack and then getting him to come to me. Irene had two little kids to care for. The lady of my house didn't work. I don't know why she needed a maid. My family bought a home in Western Springs in the spring of 1940. I don't remember how long before we were married that I quit there. Carolyn and Biff lived at Broadview. We could catch a bus on Sabbath and go to their house.
We were married September first. Howard was working in Detroit as a contractor. We had a nice big room upstairs and use of a kitchen in that basement. Bud and Howard had been living in that basement apartment. We moved back here in the spring of '42.
