- Private funeral services will be held Friday for Elwyn Charles Winne, 82, who died Monday at his home on Valleywood Drive. Me Winne had been in failing health for several years. Interment will be in Parsons Cemetery. Born in Schenectady, N. Y., he was the son of the late Ernest and Joanna Mabe Winne. His varied career touched fields of business, music, flying, sports and scouting.
Mr Winne, with the F. W. Woolworth Co. For 53 years prior to retirement nine years ago, served as Manager of the Salisbury store for 18 years, transferring here from Reading, Pa. He joined the Woolworth business on the advice of an uncle, the late Baron Gage of New York City, who was associated with Mr Woolworth in founding the chain of stores throughout the country.
His interest in music was developed during his youth while being employed by the Metropolitan Opera House and he was later instrumental in forming the "Mid-Nighters" and several other musical groups in Reading. He served on the board of directors of the Reading Symphony Orchestra for many years.
Me Wine was first commodore of the Washington DC Canoe Club and was a member of the Reading Glider Club.
His association with scouting in Salisbury included being troop chairman for 10 years of Asbury Methodist Church's Troop 151; merit badge counselor at Camp Rodney and for several years a member of the training committee for the Salisbury District of the Delmarva Boy Scout Council. In 1965 he was presented the Order of Merit Certificate by the Council.
Mr Winne was past president of the Salisbury Camera Club and was also a past member of the Salisbury Rotary Club and the Westside Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Mers. Mabel Lawlor Winne; two daughters, Mrs Patricia Winne Roberts, Green Hill Rd, and Mrs Chester A Colley, Forest Hills, N. Y.; a son E. Eugene Winne, Pine Lakes, Wayne, N. J., and six grandchildren.
