- Charles Smith enlisted in the 8th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Co. A, at the age of 20, on August 12, 1861 as a private in Davenport, Iowa. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862. He was honorably discharged at Pocahatas, Tennessee on December 31, 1863. He rejoined Co. A., 8th Iowa Volunteer Infantry January of 1864. He was promoted to Sargent on May 1, 1865 and was on detached service at Montgomery, Alabama from August 25, 1865 until his discharge at Selma, Alabama on April 20, 1866. His Military records describe him as 5' 11 1/4", light complexioned, blued eyed and sandy hair
