- Mrs. Emily Maria Smith passed away at her home on the highway, west of the Masonic cemetery last Saturday, at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 18 days. Funeral services were conducted at the Schroeder-Gano Chapel, Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Born Emily Maria Young, in Windham County, CT, June 19, 1845, the deceased went with her parents to Clinton County, IA, at the age of nine. She was married to Charles Smith, an honorable discharged soldier of the Civil War, who passed away here Feb.21, 1927, on Nov. 29, 1865. Seven children were born to them. One son, Howard, died in infancy. Those surviving are Misses Emily Smith and Grace Smith of Coquille; Mrs. Anna M. Johnson of Coquille; Mrs. Emily Squire of Milwaukie, OR; Mrs. Lucretia Stilley of Salina, KS; and E. B. Smith of Carterville, MO. She leaves also a sister, Mrs. M. J. Leonard of Holstein, IA; and two brothers, W. H. Young of Prescott, IA and Josiah Young of Beatrice, NE; besides 17 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The family lived here for a time and left about 36 years ago. In 1920, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the two daughters who made their home with them, returned to Coquille and lived until called by death, on the tract purchased from R. E. Baker

- Jesse was originally buried in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Salem Oregon and was laterexhumed and reburied in Coquille at the wish of her niece, Anna BelleJohnson Stewart.
