| Note |
- I can remember my Grandfather Smith, who lived around among his children after losing his wife. I was then 5 or 6 years old before he died, but I still remember his hands as he whittled away at cigar boxes, making them into beautiful keepsakes for every grandchild. He made picture frames, trick pincers, rolling pins, and lots of other things that delighted us. Mine disappeared when our fancy creek home burned down. He was a tall thin man with arms so long he could hardly find sleeves in any of the clothes he bought that were long enough. He was a woodsman and could cut and cord lot of wood when it was needed. And those old timers knew how to take an ax and go into the fine timber that was here in the early days and cut out nearly every part of a substantial log house. They lived in comfort with a big fireplace, all the heat they needed for warmth and cooking, and I think they could turn out perfect bread and all they needed to eat by having iron utensils to cover it all from ashes and smoke. And their old copper and brass utensils are still the envy of antique collectors.'
