  Anecdote	Jacob Demarest Newman was born in 1810 in New York City, a shoemaker and farmer. Jacob Demarest Newman enlisted in the Civil War when he was about 50 years old and apparently was a substitute for another man. He got malaria in the Civil War, but survived and was troubled with health conditions stemming from it for the rest of his life. Thomas Newman, Elizabeth Demarest Newman and Jacob Newman moved up to Sullivan County, NY where they farmed. He married Elizabeth Wall born in Orange County, NY in 1817. Jacob Demarest Newman and Elizabeth Wall had 10 children
