- Rev Dr Henry Clay Mabie, formerly of Boone county, died yesterday at his home in Boston at the age of 71 years.
Dr Mabie had been taking charge this winter of a church in West Virginia, of which one of his sons is pastor and who has been engaged in Army work, and was stricken with apoplexy. He rallied sufficiently to be taken home, but passed away soon after arrival.
His wife, who was a daughter of the late Rev Dr and Mrs Chas Hill Roe, the former at one time pastor of the First Baptist church here, survives, as also two daughters and two sons, and an adopted daughter. Mrs Ennis Keeler, of this city, is a cousin, as was the late Joy H. Saxton. Mrs Fannie Mabie Chamberlain, of Huron, S. D., is a sister and Mrs Nellie Mabie Steadler, of Northfield, Mass, a half-sister.
Dr Mabie was born in Bonus, this county, and was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Daniel C. Mabie. He was a pastor of the Belvidere church mentioned from June 1884 for a year and four months. He had been pastor of the Rockford church from 1869 to 1873, and also pastor of the churches in Indianapolis, Ind, St Paul, Minn and elsewhere
He had for many years identified with the American Baptist Missionary Union, and as an officer was sent to Asia, Japan, China and India to visit its stations. Dr Mabie was a man of high intellectual attainments and character and great personal popularity. He was widely beloved and esteemed. He was the author of many religious volumes on his travels in missionary work, and wrote many treatises on religious thought of past and present times
