- Warren Milford Maybee, 81, died peacefully on September 22, 2019 after a 10-month battle with brain cancer. Born in 1938 to Milford and Catherine (nee Reynolds) Maybee in St. Catharines, Ontario, he was a husband, father, fighter pilot, diplomat, world traveler, marathon runner, volunteer, devoted grandfather, and lover of motorcycles, steak, and a lake full of fish. Warren is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marida, his son Brad (Donna), his daughter Julie (Roosevelt), grandchildren Leyna, Kellen, and Thao, and sister Sharron (Robert).
Warren joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at 17 and became a CF-100 fighter pilot in Zweibrücken, Germany, where he met and married Marida, whose father was also stationed there. He was transferred back to Toronto and then to Penhold, Alberta where he was an instructor for new pilots. He remained active in the organization representing former members of the 440 Squadron until his death.
After leaving the Air Force in 1964, Warren attended university at St. Patrick's College, University of Ottawa. Upon graduating, he joined the foreign service as a Trade Commissioner, where he had a long career, serving in New Orleans (Louisiana), Vienna (Austria), Buffalo (New York), Moscow (Russia), Cairo (Egypt), and Dallas (Texas). After retiring in 1999, Warren and Marida enjoyed a number of years of traveling. In 2013, they moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake to be closer to family. Warren and Marida remained active in their seniors' community, where Warren served on the board of the Ina Grafton Gage Foundation. After being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor in December 2018, Warren faced this new challenge with his characteristic courage and the incredible support of Marida. He and Marida then moved to Guelph, Ontario to be closer to Brad and family.
The family would like to thank the staff at Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton, the wonderful staff at Riverside Glen Retirement Community and at Hospice Wellington in Guelph, and all the friends and family who were so supportive. Their care and tenderness will forever be remembered.
A celebration of Warren's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask those so inclined to make a donation to Hospice Wellington (hospicewellington.org) or a charity of their choice.
