- WASHBURN - Elsie L. Clayton, 91, passed away Dec. 1, 2005, at a Presque Isle hospital.
Elsie was born April 19, 1914, in Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of Frank and Nellie (Tarbox) McDuff. She was brought into the United States at a very early age and spent most of her life in Perham and Washburn, attending Washburn schools. After her marriage to her love, Athil Ira Clayton, she followed him faithfully in farm life and spent many joyous years doing all that went with it, always speaking and remembering the 'Randall Farm.' She loved the outdoors and being busy. She spent many hours picking every berry that grew, digging dandelions, fiddleheads, etc. She also loved flowers and plants and was so anxious for spring every year. After raising her six children, Elsie entered work at Potato Service and becoming an assistant forelady. She spent many happy years there making many special friends. She also worked in the cafeteria at the Washburn Elementary School for a period of time. She was very talented and could do just about anything. She made crafts, did sewing, knitting, crocheting, playing the piano and especially canning and cooking. Many family members and friends made trips to her house just to get a taste of her homemade goodies, especially her doughnuts. Elsie and her husband, Athil loved basketball and attended every ballgame they could, including all the tournaments with their special friends, Ella and Hadley Flannigan. Their loyalty earned them a lifetime pass to the games at Washburn High School. Elsie was also a regular attendant at the Advent Christian Church in Wade.
She is survived by her six children, Darlene McHatten and husband, Dana, of Castle Hill, Dolores Woodman and husband, Ellsworth, Athil 'Sonny' Clayton Jr., Fred Clayton and wife, Bonnie Ann, Robert Clayton and wife Brenda, Paul Clayton and companion, Mary Jane, all of Washburn; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchildren; one sister, Margaret Campbell of Washburn.
