| Anecdote |
- David Schuyler was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, NY on 26 December 1688. Most likely he died at Canajoharie, probably a day or two before 8 November 1762, when six shillings were due the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany for use of a pall for David Schuyler of Canajoharie. His son states: 'In the year of our Lord 1762, my father David Schuyler died at three or four in the afternoon and was buried in the Nistaguj, our churchyard.' David married first on 17 July 1720 Anna Bratt, daughter of Dirk Barentsz and Anna (Teunisz Metselaer) Bratt. The marriage was recorded in the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany. Her baptism was record at this church on 2 August 1696. She died after the birth of her second child and was buried in the graveyard of the same church on 24 September 1723. David married second to Margaret . Her first name is known since a 'Margaret Schuyler' is listed first in a mortgage dated 7 July 1766, along with Adonia Schuyler, Philip Schuyler and Joseph Mabee, two of her sons and a son-in-law; and 'Margaret Schuyler' is shown on a 1775 copy of the Van Horne Patent map of 1764 occupying the same house as 'Widow Schuyler'. The marriage probably took place in Albany. When she died or where she is buried has not been found. She was alive in 1766. It is possible that David is the David Schuyler who sold a house and lot in Albany in 1726. He was a merchant in Albany in 1731 when he purchased a 1/5 share (approximately 1500 acres) of a patent which became known as the Van Horne Patent. The Patent was located south of the Mohawk River in the area which was called Canajoharie. It is not known when David Schuyler moved from Albany and settled on the Van Horne Patent, but it is believed that he was there by the mid 1730s. David was involved in land purchases in the western part of New York Province because the Indians held him in high regard. The Indians lived at Indian Castle which was on a portion of the Van Horne Patent. Because of his relations with the Indians, David helped a number of others obtain patent agreements for land in Canajoharie. In the mid 1750s, David and his son Peter D. Schuyler and his brother Peter P. Schuyler were partners with others in the purchase of a large patent that became known as Schuyler's Patent. This Patent bordered on Lake Canadarago. David sold several or all of his lots shortly after obtaining them. In 1762, David appeared before Sir William Johnson and gave a deposition regarding a survey conducted by Edward Collins in 1744 or 1745. The deposition states that David was living along the Mohawk River, so he was living on the Van Horne Patent at least by this time. David signed his will in 1759. When the executors mentioned in David's will refused to act, David's son John was appointed the executor. The will suggests that he was a man of extensive property. The will mentions lands and pretensions at Canajoharie and Lake Canjaderago; mines and minerals at Canajohary or elsewhere; estates claims, and pretension in Albany and New York and in the Colony of Rensselaerwyck and in Surhinam. David's brother, Johannes Schuyler, was the Vice Admiral of Schoutbynacht in Surinam and died and was buried on 22 Jully 1740. David died in 1762 and his wife continued to live on the Van Horne Patent. A map drawn as a result of a survey of the Van Horne Patent in 1764, shows the 'Widow Schuyler' with a house on Lot No. 26, David's son Peter D. with a house on Lot No. 28, and David's son-in-law Joseph Mabee with a house on Lot No. 27, all in a row on the Third Allotment.
