- The Mankato Free Press gave the following account of the killing of Everett Maby by the accidental discharge of a revolver.
Everett Maby, a nephew of Mrs. J. E. McWhorter, wife of the proprietor of the Commercial House is this city, was shot and instantly killed by George W. Walsh, a stranger, on the farm of G. Morris, east of St. James, Tuesday night. The remains of the deceased passed through the city Wednesday on the 4:45 p. m. train on their way to Janesville, from which place they will be taken to Alma City for interment. They were accompanied by the young man's father, Hugh Maby, who lives in Alma City, and Mr. McWhorter. These two gentlemen went to St. James yesterday, as soon as they heard of the affair, and got the remains.
The shooting is claimed to have been accidental, Walsh had stayed with Maby and Bergo Miller, the other renter of the farm, since Friday night and early Tuesday left, to take a job he had secured on a nearby farm.
Walsh became lost and about ten o'clock wandered back to the farm.
His companion took him in and he sat down to the table where they were eating. Their conversation was friendly and during the course of the meal several presents were exchanged between them.
Afterward Walsh assisted in cleaning up the dishes and while leaning over the stove, Maby came up behind him and slipped an old revolver in his hip pocket. Walsh took it out and examined it, while Maby had gone to one corner of the room preparing to retire. He snapped the trigger and the bullet entered the corner of Maby's left eye and death was almost instantaneous.
Walsh immediately came to St. James and gave himself up.
The Maby family has resided at Alma City for some time, and is a large one. Several brothers and sisters of the deceased are living there.
