Witness-Obituary |

Chittenango, New York [9] |
- Our village had but scarcely recovered from the shock produced by the sadden death of one of our most estimable citizens, Mr. Edward Root, before it was again startled by the sad intelligence of the decease of Albert Mabie, Esq., who died on Wednesday of last week, of typhoid pneumonia, after a brief illness. Mr. Mabie was born in Stone Arabia, Montgomery Co., March 18th, 1810. At nine years of age he moved to the town of Lenox, in this county where he resided eight years, and then went to Manlius Center, Onondaga Co., where he remained ten years. He subsequently moved to the town of Sullivan, this county, where he resided until his death, a period of nearly forty years .— In 1833 he married a daughter of Henry Ehle, Esq., who survives him. Mr. Mabie was a gentleman of kind and gentle disposition, an unobtrusive, unostentatious citizen, who had the confidence and respect of (he entire community. He was a man of sterling worth, of high moral character, strict integrity, sympathetic and charitable. He was, an upright conscientious man whose unexpected demise entails a loss upon the people with whom he lived. Notwithstanding the weather was extremely cold, on Sunday last, the funeral of was man was more largely attended than any other that we have witnessed since our residence in this place. The remains were taken in charge by the Masonic Fraternity, of which he had for many years been a faithful member. After a prayer at the house, by Rev. J . H. Enders the remains were conveyed to the Reformed church, where the services were to be held. The Baptist society gave up their usual
morning service and joined in showing their respect for the dead —their pastor, Rev. Ira Dennet, occupying the pulpit with Rev. Mr. Enders. The body of the church was filed to its utmost capacity, and many were seated in she gallery. Rev. Mr. Bennett, after the first hymn was sung, made an impressive prayer and read a chapter in thebible and gave out a hymn, when Rev. Mr.
Enders preached an able, appropriate and feeling sermon. After the close of the exercises, the viewing of the remains, the procession reformed and proceeded to Oakwood Cemetery, where the remains were consigned .to the grave with Masonic honors. Worshipful Master. A. H . Downer, performed the ceremonies and Past Master Hitchcock acted as Marshal.

- On last Sunday afternoon, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Hall, the soul of Mrs. Maria Mabie passed peacefully away. Mrs. Mabie was a daughter of Mr. Henry Ehle, and was born in 1813. Of her farther's family, a sister, Mrs. Daniel Gates, and a brother, Mr. Andrew Ehle, are the only survivors. In 1833 she married Mr. Albert Mabie, whose death in 1873 was so widely and
deeply lamented.
The long years of her widowhood have been largely spent in retirement, and few people have of late enjoyed the acquaintance of one whose geniality and large benevolence of kind words and deeds have made her presence everywhere most welcome. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Mabie were four in number, two sons and two daughters. Of her family Mrs. Charlotte Hall survives, who with grandchildren and other relatives, will sadly miss her kindly face and long familiar voice. During her last illness Mrs. Mabie was unreserved in her expressions of religious trust, and her death was in the peacefulness and beauty of a clear faith in Jesus.
On Tuesday afternoon a large company of mourners and sympathetic friends attended the funeral services, conducted by Rev. Mr. Walker, at the Presbyterian Church, and followed her body to its resting place in Oakwood Cemetery
Thus from a large circle of loving relatives and friends, has gone out a life whose ever ready and helpful ministries had long been a blessing to our community. The multitude of fond and happy memories of this "good woman" will perpetuate the gentle influence of her quiet life, and will abide as a precious benediction in the hearts that are most deeply bereaved.
