Anecdote |
- Giles Mabee was our 7th mayor holding office for three terms. His terms ran 1891-1892, 1898-1899, and 1899-1900. He came to Wisconsin via New York in 1869 at the age of 22. He was baggage master with the Wisconsin Central Railroad. He improved streets which included opening Elizabeth street between Milwaukee and Western avenues and North Milwaukee street, once a large hill, was graded. A well was dug for fire protection at the corner of Elizabeth and Caroline streets for $306. An ordinance was adopted making it unlawful to throw garbage into the Mullet River, including dead animals, entrails, blood, manure, filth or unwholesome substances, or matter or contents from any privy vault. Fines were set at $25. Mr. Mabee's council sold the old Lutheran Church for $75 which Mr. Pfeiffer's council bought back for $100. In the election of 1893, votes for Mr. Mabee and W.C. Saeman were tied, resulting in a drawing by the Clerk which favored Mr. Saeman for mayor. Two other gentlemen held the office of mayor when in 1898 Mr. Mabee returned for two additional terms.
