- A most horrible accident occurred near Chittenango, on the morning of the 25th inst, Ambrose Mabie, son of Albert Mabie, who resides about two miles southwest of the Village, had been engaged in laying out some work for a hired man, when a neighbor returned a hoe that he had borrowed.— Young Mabie took the hoe, and with the neighbor took a seat upon the fence enclosing the field. After awhile, young Mabie attempted to jump down from the fence, and in doing so in some unaccountable way fell upon the point of the hoe handle, which was in an upright position. It entered his body at a point on the inner side of the terminus of the spinal column and back of tho intestines, penetrating to a depth of fifteen inches and producing a fatal wound. He lingered in great suffering till two o'clock on Friday, when death relieved him. The deceased was about 23 years of age, and had prospects for the future which made life desirable. His untimely death will he sincerely mourned, not only by his relatives, but by a large circle of friends. Dr. Billington, of Chittonango was called early, and afforded the patient such relief as the case admitted, but the doctor's skill could not arrest the fatal result of such a terrible laceration of the body.
