- "Mercedes Mabie, 88, died in Fishkill on Sunday, July 20, 2003. She was born in Ancram, New York on September 13, 1914 to Maude Rossman Rockefeller and Albert Rockefeller. She and Edmund Wheeler Mabie married on March 1, 1936. They lived in Poughkeepsie until 2000 when they moved to Fishkill to reside with their daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Oliver Johnson. Mercedes was predeceased in 2002 by her beloved Edmund, husband of 65 years."
"She leaves a sister, Yetive Weatherly of Port Charlotte, Florida, a son, Dr. Jan Edmund Mabie of Milledgeville, Georgia, a daughter, Christine M. Johnson of Fishkill; three grandchildren, Dr. Jacqueline Johnson Castagno of Rosswell, Georgia; Jill Johnson Rendeiro, Tennessee; six great-grandchildren, Christopher, Gregory and Caroline Rendeiro of Avon, Connecticut; Anna and Michael Castagno of Roswell, Georgia and Lauren Mabie of Memphis, Tennessee; sisters-in-law Patricia Magette of Ahoskic, North Carolina and Evelyn Danilevics of Hyde Park. Her family is grateful to her loyal and loving caretakers Joyce Johnson, Carole Forman, Connie Beatty and
Julie Beatty.
"Mercedes graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1930. She earned a B. A. from American University and an M.A. from the State University of New York at New Paltz. She taught for several years at Titusville Elementary School. Mercedes pursued many diverse interests throughout her life. She was an avid gardener and member of local and state garden clubs. Mercedes shared her artistic talents as a volunteer for the Vassar Hospital Auxiliary and for the Senior Citizen Center. She was active in the local Republican Party and the American Association for University Women. Mercedes and Edmund enjoyed traveling to Europe, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. They were avid bridge players and also delighted in fishing, both locally and in Canadian lakes. There will be no calling hours. A service will be held for family and friends at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Mausoleum at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 22. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund, Church of God Prophesy, 164 South Cherry St., Poughkeepsie, New York 12601. Arrangements have been entrusted to Parmele Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie."

- Evelyn says, "I am writing to inform you of the death of my brother Edmund Wheeler Mabie on February 5, 2002. He and his wife would have observed their 66th wedding anniversary on March 1, 2002. Edmund's two brothers, Charles and George predeceased him. Edmund leaves his wife, Mercedes Rockefeller Mabie, a son, Dr. Jan Mabie of Georgia, a daughter, Christine Johnson of Fishkill, New York, two sisters Patricia Magette of Ahoskie, North Carolina and myself (Evelyn) as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Edmund was 86 years old and at the time of his death was living with his daughter and son-in-law in Fishkill, New York."

- Edmund Wheeler Mabie, 86, died in Poughkeepsie on Tuesday, Feb 5, 2002. He was a native of Poughkeepsie, born on Jan 25, 1916 in the Fairview section, to Charles V. and Beulah Wheeler Mabie.
Mr Mabie is survived by his wife, Mercedes Rockefeller Mabie, with whom they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2001. He also leaves two sisters Evelyn Danilevics of Hyde Park and Patricia Magette of Ahoskie, N. C.; a son, Dr. Jan Edmund Mabie of Milledgeville, Ga; and a daughter, Christine M. Johnson of Fishkill; three grandchildren, Dr Jaquelyn Johnson Castanago of Roswell, Ga.; Jill Johnson Rendeiro of Avon, Conn.; and Dr Matthew Wheeler Mabie of Memphis Tenn. He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Christopher, Gregory and Caroline Renderio of Avon, Conn., and Lauren Mabie of Memphis, Tenn.
Many knew Mr Mabie as the sewing machine man at the Wallace Company in Poughkeepsie, where he worked for 30 years. At age 45 Mr Mabie decided to change careers. He began his college education at Dutchess Community College and went on to the State University of New York at New Paltz, earning his B.A. and M.A. in English and Education. He taught English at Arlington Junior High School for several years before retirement from this second career, having taught many area residents the joys of English Literature. For many years he was a member of the Poughkeepsie Masonic Lodge. A lifelong area resident, Mr Mabie waas an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing at his beloved Mt Riga, near Millerton.
There will be no calling hours.
A service will be held for family and friends at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Mausoleum at 11 am Thursday, Feb 7.
