They had to wear blue and white checkered dresses everyday, but on Sunday got to wear a red and white checkered dress. The State of Michigan made their dad come and get them, but he wouldn't take Gladys. He put them on the Olson farm in Freesoil. Their father lived in Sheridan and would come to see them once a year and bring them clothes. He would leave by train so every time Virginia heard a train it reminded her that her dad was gone.
