- Mrs. David Slack, a resident of the Chapin vicinity, died at the Sanitarium, late Wednesday night, as a result of injuries sustained when she was struck by a Ford sedan occupied by Ernest J. Bradley and Miss Emily Deal of this village. The accident happened at an early hour on Monday night. Mrs. Slack, her son, Clifford, and a boy named Edm
und Dibble were walking along the highway, a short distance from the gas station at Chapin. The Ford, according to the statements of Mr. Bradley, the owner, and Miss Deal, who was driving, was going towards Shortsville and met another car. The occupants claim the lights of the approaching car blinded them and they failed to see the three people walking on the road. Young Dibble jumped when he saw the Ford upon them and escaped injury. Mrs. Slack's son was slightly injured but his mother was knocked down. Bradley and Miss Deal brought her to the Sanitarium.
Mr. Bradley is a well known resident of the village and is employed by the Lehigh Valley at Manchester, Miss Deal is a student nurse at the Sanitarium. Her home is at Allen's Hill. Much sympathy is felt for all concerned in the accident.
Mrs. Slack was a daughter of the late William and Sarah Maybee Wheatley and was born in the town of Manchester in 1883. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dibble of Canandaigua and Miss Zelma Slack of Shortsville, two sons, Elmer and Clifford Slack of Shortsville, four sisters, Mrs. Harry Wolcott of Manchester; Mrs. William Larner and Mrs. John Slack of Manchester Center, and Mrs. Mamie Daymon of R. D., Shortsville; also one brother, Albert Wheatley, of R. D., Shortsville, and a half-brother, Richard Wheatley of Hopewell. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon from the Manchester Baptist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Leon L. Swarthout. The burial was made in the Pioneer cemetery about two miles east of Shortsville, on the Clifton Springs Road.
