- Eleanor Woolfitt Johnson, 103, died on February 26 at Tendercare of Leelanau, Suttons Bay, Michigan. She was born at home in Bay City on June 8, 1908, the tenth child of Mary and Amos Woolfitt. She was preceded in death by husbands Lewis M. Fenton, Crosby M. Rogers and George C. Johnson. Eleanor is survived by two sons, James L. Fenton (Georgie), George W. Rogers (Joan); four grandchildren, Georgiana Vailliencourt (Bill), Jennifer Fenton, Timothy Rogers (Valerie), Mark Rogers; and seven great-grandchildren. There are several nephews and nieces. She was educated in the Bay City Public Schools, graduating from Bay City Central High School with honors in 1926. Eleanor then graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a BA in French and English in 1930. She was a teacher in the Bay City Public Schools for 30 years, as Miss Woolfitt, Mrs. Fenton, and as Mrs. Rogers at several schools, retiring from the MacGregor Middle School. Eleanor was a member of the Madison Avenue United Methodist Church for sixty years until she retired to Gladwin. She was then active in the St. Paul's Episcopal Church for twenty years. Following several years as a resident in the Rachel Sovereign Memorial Home in Bay City, she moved to Leelanau Memorial, now Tendercare of Leelanau in Suttons Bay. Eleanor was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, MEA, NEA, Retired Teachers Association, The WSCS, and the United Methodist Women. In recent years she was a member of the Leland United Methodist Church. A Funeral Service will be held at the Smith-Miner Funeral Home, 2700 W. Wackerly, Midland, Michigan, on March 10, 2012, at 1:30 pm with Reverend Dr. Charles Keyworth of First United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the time of the service. A private burial will take place at a later date in Troy, Michigan, at the White Chapel Memorial Cemetery.
